What information do you need to have to find an ancestor's marriage certificate?

I know my Great grandparents were married in scranton, PA. However, All i know is my great grandmother's death date. I don't know the day the were married, I don't know their birthdays, etc. How can I go about searching for this document? What information do you need to have to find an ancestor's marriage certificate?
Scranton is located in Lackawanna County, so their marriage would have been recorded at the Lackawanna county courthouse. You can call or write to the courthouse and ask them how to go about ordering a copy of the document. All you'll need is an approximate date (a span of 10-20 years is usually okay) and their names. If you have her maiden name, great - but if you don't, they can look it up by the groom's last name. Just give them as much information as you have.

Here's the address and phone number:

Lackawanna County Marriage Bureau

200 N. Washington Ave

Scranton, PA 18503

(570) 963- 6723

Some Lackawanna marriage records are online on the Lackawanna County PAGenWeb site. Check it out - you may be able to find it there:

What information do you need to have to find an ancestor's marriage certificate?
There are phone numbers and addresses at this site, they have Lackawanna County marriage records back to 1885 for a one-time fee of $10: http://www.vitalrec.com/pacounties8.html鈥?/a>

Here's another website, scroll down to ';Marriage'; record types: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/howto/w2w/pennsy鈥?/a>

I've found County Recorders to be extremely helpful, you may want to call or email the County Recorder directly. Because records were handwritten and usually haven't been indexed yet, the date or approximate date would be the most useful piece of information you could have.

If your great-grandparents were married by 1930, you should be able to get at least an estimated birth year and birth location from the US Census records. That information (and the date of birth of their first child) will help you narrow down the marriage date to a range of roughly 2-3 years.

You could always post their names and your best guess for a marriage year on this forum, or email me through my Yahoo profile (click on my avatar to get to it), there are several of us here who have Ancestry.com subscriptions and are happy to do lookups.

Best of luck to you!
if you know the year they were married, their names and (possibly) whereabouts roughly they were married that should help to narrow it down.
If you know their names and where they were married, there are plenty of sites that can steer you in the right direction.
