Why should gay marriage be looked at as a top priority in the election?

There are a lot of things way more important than same sex marriage. The economy, the war, healthcare, taxes, crime, the military, security, terrorism, ect... Why should gay marriage be so important in the election even if there is a crisis happening? Why should something so irrelevant be placed higher than things more crucial. If 2 people of any gender live in the same house and pay the bills with each other, what difference would getting married make if they are already basically married? Why should gay marriage be looked at as a top priority in the election?
yeah these issues affect everyone, even gays and lesbians so they should get more attention

on the other hand i really don't care about gay marriage. just get the government out of it and stuff lolzWhy should gay marriage be looked at as a top priority in the election?
Marriage gives you many legal rights.
I don't know that it is or should be. I suppose if you are gay voter or have a particularly interest in supporting it, it might be a top priority.

Of course this could be asked of MANY issues. Everybody thinks their top issue should be THE top issue.

Gay marriage is AN issue in the US at the moment. Nothing wrong with raising the issue.
It shouldn't be a top priority. Seriously to much other stuff to worry about.
It could be taxed to pay for Obama's spending spree!
BINGO, you've realized that most of the voting public are idiots !
I dont think it should be, nor do I think it should be called a marriage, gays want to be together fine call it a commitment and end the bs
Who said it was a TOP PRIORITY. Obama is not for gay marriage, he never has been.
it's a wedge issue like abortion or gun control. not really important or top priority, but people care about it more than other issues so they make a big deal out of it.
Its a wedge issue to seperate those who ';believe'; from those who dont. As it does a very good job of this politicians will continue to cling to it.
Well obviously it's not so ';irrelevant'; to the homosexuals.

Marriage offers a lot of rights. Such as tax and legal benefits that eloped couples don't get.
It shouldnt be a top priority right now. Approx 8-10% of the pop is gay and not every single one even wants to be married or is old enough to be married. I dont think that will stop the activists pushing right now for it though.

its an issue we have to visit, but not right at the moment.
i agree with you completely. this would probably be just a move to earn some votes from the gays.
QUEER MARRIAGE IS SICK!!!
Civil liberties are always important.
I dunno is it a civil liberty?

In 1960 was the debate of integrating schools an overblown issue?

It all depends on how you see it.
Same reason in every election abortion some how comes up. It's a yes/no issue which is really easy to divide the public on, and doesn't require the voter to think.

The real issues that are affecting most of the population usually get swept under the rug. Even Obama during his change campaign stayed away from addressing obesity and drug abuse (which includes pharmaceuticals).

Fact: Prescription meds are more deadly than Islamic terrorists.
