I have been think about writing a short paper about marriage and family counselors, but in looking for information I have realized that I could not find out any information on how many of these ';family and marriage'; counselors are actually married or even have a family of their own. What percent of family and marriage counselors are actually married or have a family?
Why is that even relevant? A marriage and family therapist counsellor doesn't have to be married or have a family to be good at what they do. That's like saying a psychologist has to experience all of the mental disorders in the DSM-IV in order to treat their patients. What percent of family and marriage counselors are actually married or have a family?
I agree with Jade. What you're asking is irrelevant. It's like asking how many mental health professionals who work with substance abuse have been alcoholics themselves.
As a mental health professional, some of the best child/adolescent therapists I've ever known were single.
What you're asking is a common misperception in our culture.
